In what ways will you help your students improve their reading skills?

We use the Accelerated Reading program that the Heber-Overgaard Unified School District adopted to enhance reading throughout all grade levels. AR consists of reading designated books and then taking tests on the book to accumulate points. Each student will make a personal point goal based on his/her personal reading level. At Mogollon HS, we allow students 20 minutes of school time per day to read AR books and reach their goals. Please refer to the Student Handbook for other aspects of the program.

Is it possible for MHS students to receive weighted grades for some classes?

Although the majority of courses at MHS award grades on a standard 4.0 scale, certain advanced courses award grades on a weighted 5.0 scale. Students taking these advanced courses may have a GPA of greater than 4.0. Weighted classes currently available include Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Human Anatomy and Physiology.

How does transferring from another school affect weighted grades earned at that school?

When students transfer from another school district to Mogollon High School and wish to compete for academic honors, they may receive weighted grades only for the classes that are available at MHS. Students with additional advanced placement courses (those not offered at Mogollon High School ) will receive neighed credit for those courses for the purpose of calculating GPA’s. However, their transcripts will still reflect the honors course title.

What is the school’s discipline policy?

The purpose our discipline policy is to encourage students to be responsible for their own behavior and to allow all students the opportunity to learn in a safe and orderly environment. We have based our discipline policy on a point system. For each violation of the discipline policy, a student will not only receive an immediate consequence but will also accrue points against his or her status as a student in good standing. We assign points for offenses based on their relative severity. Repeated instances of the same offense result in higher points and more severe consequences than for a first offense. A student who accrues a total of 100 points during a school year will select consequences from a list of options. Please read the Student Handbook for more detailed information regarding our discipline policy.

What if my child must be absent from school?

We classify absences as either excused or unexcused. In order to excuse an absence, the student’s parent or guardian must call or send a note to verify the absence each day that the student will be absent. Parent/Guardians must verify all absences within 24 hours of the students’ return to school. State law requires students to spend 60 hours of seat time in a class for a semester’s credit. Students can meet this requirement only if they miss fewer than ten days per class per semester. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further information regarding our attendance policy.

What will happen if a student is late to school?

A student is tardy any time he/she is not in class when the tardy bell begins to ring. We do not allow tardy students to attend class. They must go to the In School Suspension room for the remainder of the class period. While in ISS, the student will write 80 or more sentences and then will go to the next class period. Should the student not finish the 80 sentences during the allotted period, he/she will have to go to lunch detention to finish the remainder of the sentences. Although teachers are not required to provide make-up assignments for tardy students, it is the student’s responsibility to see if he/she can obtain any make-up assignments for the missed class.

Five tardies per semester in a class will result in an absence counting towards perfect attendance. This includes excused tardies during first hour.
